Those clouds occur a couple of times a year (source: SMHI, Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute) over scandinavia and in Sweden they're called "pärlemormoln". Here's an article with picture in swedish: http://www.dn.se/DNet/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=147&a=736636&rss=1399

Just to nitpick, many of those are Armored Personnel Carriers (BMP-1s and BMP-2s, looks like), rather than tanks.
The lack of an Extremely Large Turreted Gun is the giveaway there.
(Things with an Extremely Large Non-Turreted Gun are mobile artillery, not tanks either.)

A man in Texas I knew lost a D9 Cat (very similar to a tank but no gun) in a Gulf Coast salt marsh. The only thing that was left was bubbles and the operator swam for his life. The company wrote the thing off 'cause there was nothing that could go and retrieve it.

On the Dubai Ski Resort, the same company that built it are supposedly set to build another here in North Texas. The "Bearfire Ski Resort" will have an astroturf-type surface in place of real snow. According to a news report about it a while back on CNN, it's the same surface they used on this Dubai resort. I'm sure you can find the report on YouTube.

My wife and I went to Bolivia to see the salt flats based on a previous posting on DRB. It was truly amazing. It was really fun to play around in the train graveyard. The currently running train passes right by the old abandoned trains, hence the still used tracks. If you want to see more picture of the salt flats or the trains, I have a few (although not as good as these) up at http://www.flickr.com/photos/mooreta79/

There was a very damning report about this very area on our 'Foreign Correspondant'. Uyuni is the site of the greatest lithium depsosits in the world worth trillions of dollars, read the new oil; the locos were featured as a reference to exploitations past.
Bolivia currently has a socialist government and those pesky Bolshies actually want 50% cut of their natural resources. Does that mean the salt lake will be dug up as they have to expose the brine water to get to the lithium?

Larger helicopters have been seriously proposed, though usually not as passenger transports. The Hiller Museum in San Carlos CA (south of SFO) has documents and a film from a (semi) serious proposal from Hiller to recover Saturn V booster stages in midair, using an enormous helicopter. I no longer recall the helicopter specs, but it was something like a 200 foot rotor turning at 10 RPM, with full-sized turbojet engines at the rotor tips.

Bel Geddes was among the first industrial designers, like Raymond Loewy, but mainly created dream products rather than actual products. But fantactic dream products !
