History of the Tailsitter Airplanes

"QUANTUM SHOT" #202
Article by guest blogger Erlend Aaseth

Today we welcome our guest blogger - Erlend Aaseth, originally from a small Norwegian fishing village, who now resides in Australia. His recently-started site Giant Earth is all about vintage technology and airplanes, check it out. Here he's expanding on the interesting subject of VTOL concepts first covered by an excellent French site Prototypes.com and Fogonazos .

A vertical takeoff, level flight and a tail landing
- first VTOL concepts

They are a truly remarkable piece of aviation history - so called "Tailsitter" airplanes. Made in the late 40’s and early 50’s they were an attempt to eliminate the necessity of runways.

In the later stages of WWII the German company Focke Wulf had a spectacular design for a tailsitting fighter: the Triebflügeljäger. The idea was a fighter that would take off and land vertically on its tail. With the Allied bombardment devastating the country's armaments industry it was crucial for the Germans to have interceptors that could take off and protect German factories. The idea was to station fighters near industrial areas and to get them into the air without the use of increasingly bombarded runways. However, the design came too late in the war for it to reach a prototype or production stage.

After the war the Americans saw the potential in such a design. With the danger of Western Europe falling under a Soviet invasion and the possible denial of airfields, project Hummingbird was born in 1947. The idea was to develop an interceptor that could take off from virtually anywhere. There were plans to station them in fields and on ships both military and merchant. There were even talk of a submarine based fighter.

Both Convair and Lockheed were commissioned to make prototypes: the XFY-1 and XFV-1. These fighters featured turbo prop engines with contra rotating propellers. A jet powered version was also produced in the Ryan X-13 Vertijet. The XFY-1 was the first tailsitter who completed a vertical takeoff, level flight and a tail landing during test flights.

The XFY-1, nicknamed "Pogo"

XFY-1

XFV-1

XFV-1

The XFV-1 was not as successful as the XFV-1. Landing gear had to be mounted in order to conduct test flights:

"The Coléoptère" was a French prototype, having so called "annular wing configuration" (designed in 1952, first flight in 1959)

Ryan Company X-13 "VertiJet" (1953):

The X-13 was a jet powered prototype capable of vertical takeoff and landing. This design proved to be much more difficult to steer during takeoff and landing compared to the prop driven ones. It did not have the benefit of airflow over the rudders produced by the props.

The engine of X-13:

X-13 Vertijet during trials:

The X-13 prototype performing a successful test flight in front of Pentagon officials:

The Hummingbird project proved to be a difficult one. The tailsitters could not meet the performance requirements set by the Navy and Air force. In the end they were abandoned and the dream of an aircraft that could take off and land on its tail was left to writers of science fiction novels.

You can find some great images (and information) on the Fw Triebflugel at http://www.luft46.com/fw/fwtrieb.html

And a scale model at http://meltingpot.fortunecity.com/seymour/32/triebmp.html

I picked up the model on a trip to Koblenz once, and it is quite nice. Have yet to assemble it though!

Landing these planes was a near-impossible feat, as depth perception is distorted while looking over one's shoulder, especially when also upside down or laying on one's back.

  • About the "Man at Work" poster in Bratislava: in the centre of the Bratislava there are several bronze statues which are placed where people would normally be doing stuff that people normally do: one of them is standing in the corner of two streets, one of them is sitting at an actual park bench reading a paper, etc. The picture in the sign depicts one of those statues, a worker peeping out of a real man hole in the street, so the sign is obviously meant to be humourous.

  • Hello.
First of all, your blog is very good.

It´s not a F-18 super hornet. It´s a F-14 (wacth the rest of the photos, the diference is noticeable), and there is an aditional reason for the vapor contrail: at certain altitude there are air zones of very low temperature (-X ºC), so the condensation is another reason.

  • Actually the disk shape and most of the other photos; these weird clouds occur when the aircraft is moving at transonic speed- these are from about Mach 0.8 to Mach 1.2, and I suspect that none of these aircraft are actually going faster than mach 1.0 in fact for practical reasons. (The shapes are caused where the *air* is *temporarily* forced to speed up past the aircraft to supersonic speeds, but since the aircraft is moving below the speed of sound, no sonic boom reaches the ground.)

Also the bit about the throttle is a bit misleading, it's the speed of the aircraft that determines where the disk forms (of course the pilot adjusts that using the throttle, but there's a lag since it takes time to accelerate...)

    Hope this helps.

  • Contrails have nothing to do with vortices from the wing tips. They are formed from the water vapor in the engine exhaust. If it were from the wingtips, all planes would produce the same number of contrails. Coincidentally, it is always the same as the number of engines.

  • There are other types of contrails besides those from the engine exhaust. I've seen and taken pictures of propeller driven aircraft with contrails forming off the prop tips and wrapping themselves around the fuselage and nacelles of the aircraft for five or six spirals from the front of the aircraft/nacelle. This is usually in high ambient temperature/high humidity conditions. I've also seen a number of pictures of contrails forming off the wingtips of aircraft pulling g's, also in high temp/humid conditions. Just wanted to share.

  • In reply to the people thinking the fly-by is an f-14. It is in fact an F/A-18. The very distinct detail of the wings is clearly a super hornet. The wings in the photo are inable of sweeping as the f-14 can. Look at the wing shape.

  • Hmm, I guess it's true that some guys have unrealistic expectations from a relationship. Your SO is supposed to be physically attractive, accept your interests, suppress her emotions, and play second fiddle to your TV. Meanwhile, you get to be a fatass who just doesn't give a shit about her hobbies, self esteem or thoughts. Puh-leeze. These lists aren't funny, and anyone who thinks they are is just sending out a strong signal to the world about how self-centered they are.

Here's a protip, in case you didn't pick up on it. If you don't want to have to read her mind, don't bitch when she expresses her emotions. I'm surprised you feel you need space- most women I know have enough respect that they wouldn't touch someone like you with a ten-foot-pole.

  • I know its supposed to be something funny but in actuality its pretty much true & that's not funny, its disturbing, its not right, its... many things, too many to say.
Men are from Mars, Woman are from Venus, if women were like men then the world would be full of pigs (dogs, scum, a-holes... whatever you want to call them)
Why is it, if women acted as men do they would be considered whores? How come men don't know its wrong to lie when they cheat? Or just because their not actually caught in the act, they think they haven't done anything wrong? Why do men lie about what they do? If you know its wrong then don't do it. If you know you f..ked up, then be a real man & admit to it.
Have you ever thought if you actually treated someone with respect then maybe you would get it right back? If you have & you still don't get it then that person isn't worth it or the real attraction isn't there, your just settling for something.
Attraction is one thing, but to be attracted & fall in love... True love is hard to find but you can't LOOK for it, I believe in time & at the right time it will COME to you.
In the mean time don't expect a miracle, just remember, to keep what you have, realize they are who they are, that's why you are w/ them. If you expected something else then you shouldn't be with them. All men lie. They have their reasons. All women bitch, we have our reasons, too. Men are the #1 reason.
