Retro-Technology Update

"QUANTUM SHOT" #88

Vacuum Tube Radio / Interior Design Piece

One obscure shop in Japan sells these:

An alarm clock with all its cog-wheels spilling out.

Speaking about cool steampunk-ish clocks, these ones go on your computer desktop.

Recently you could buy on Ebay this cool Cold War-era Russian phone
(from a subterranean nuclear bunker):

(the text says: "Remember! The Enemy is listening!")

and a quite collectible retro calculator:

For the more radically inclined (not satisfied with mere external case modifications) - there is a Tinkertoy wooden computer. Entirely in a class of its own, this is a unique, if rather slow computer concept:

Technology, Gadgets, Consumer Electronics

Read its description here. Apparently it's good enough to beat humans at the "tic-tac-toe" game.

Nixie Tube clocks
Exotic, practical clocks built around wonderfully obsolete Nixie display tubes.

"NIXIE" numeric displays: introduced in 1952, they quickly became the most common numeric display device in laboratory/industrial equipment until they were instantly forgotten in the early 1970's.

Unique Clock-Voltmeter

Technology, Gadgets, Consumer Electronics

Believe it or not, this is also a clock. "The Model 13 is a one of a kind clock, partially a design study in the use of an analog meter movement for information display. The clock is housed in a portable AC voltmeter, available from the late 1930's through the mid-1950's. The original meter movement was retained, and the meter card recalibrated with scales necessary to display time and date. A fairly complex set of software routines are necessary to accurately present time on the primitive and decidedly nonlinear meter movement.
As far as is known, no commercial clock ever used this type of display, though it is compact and efficient. Its meter scale shares the same principles with the slide rule."

  • Great pics - love 'em.

I went through a couple of situations like this in the Navy on a Spruance-class destroyer.

Waves over 40 feet tall submerged the bow, ripped fire hoses off their fittings and flattened the life rails to the deck. The whole ship shuddered with every wave impact. We had to wear seatbelts at our watchstations. Although we were half afraid the bow would break off, it was kind of a fun experience.

At one time, we were steaming with an older ship that had riveted hull plates, and we had to turn away from the waves because she was springing her rivets from the impact of running into the waves. Going parallel to those waves is much worse from a comfort standpoint. The worst though is quartering the waves, because you go up and down at the same time as you're rolling side-to-side - tough to eat or keep your food down when that's going on.

In that account she spoke about how hard it was to understand the Christian concept of the Trinity because of the way it's used on NK. Apparently there are three people in NK (Kim Jong Il being one of them) who are worshiped as a trinity of godlike men. That's why it seems appropriate for there to be so much imagery in those posters about threes... three missiles, three people, three prongs, etc... anyway, it really caught my eye that they use 3 so much.

  • hey can we get some one to translate these posters?!?!?!

  • Please proofread your content. Two of the posters (not the army training pictures) are clearly Chinese, with Chinese characters, one poster actually saying "China" in it. The fact you lump them all together in one generic translation is definitely not true. The translation you provided does not apply to the Chinese posters, although because I cannot read Korean, I wouldn't be able to tell about the others. The fact that you cannot tell the difference is unacceptable, especially if you're going to group all of them together. Also, the Chinese posters don't even have "anti-US" sentiments in them. There's nothing that says "down with captialism" in them, and there's not even a picture of them crushing a capitol building, or beating the crap out of an American. And also, you can clearly see the South Korean symbol in the headbands of some of the army training pictures. Please take down or make a note of the pictures I've mentioned, as I'm assuming most of your readers will assume what you have when you posted these pictures. No hard feelings, just please be more accurate.

  • Kinser - What state do you live in? And if you don't think that Iran is so beautiful in these pictures, then perhaps you should take a look at this:

    http://www.worldisround.com/articles/73022/index.html

    http://www.worldisround.com/articles/98910/index.html

And Kinser, I don't think Iran is any more terrorist than the U.S. is! I'll tell you why: First of all can you mention any terrorist activity where the terrorist or terrorists have been Iranian?

Iran supports Hamas and Hezbollah, but these organizations are no more terrorist than was the Contra which the U.S. supported. The CIA has also supported the murderous fascist "grey wolves" of Turkey, and several congressmen and the current U.S. establishment and Pentagon have supported /are supporting an anti-Iranian terrorist group by the name of MKO or MEK (Mujahedin Khalq Organization) which also happens to be listed on the U.S. list of terrorist groups! So I really can not see how you can think that Iran is any more a "terrorist state" than the U.S. is.

And finally here is another great album: http://www.worldisround.com/articles/343042/index.html

as for the terrorism charge, it is debateable and depends on your perspective. some would say bombing with depleted uranium is the height of terrorism. it is pretty clear that the people dodging the american bombs were terrified.

as with most things, i suggest you follow the money. some people are making billions from our war culture. all wars end up with arms sellers behind them. the people would like q chance to get along
