Pre-Fractal Art

"QUANTUM SHOT" #91

Stunning Examples of Fractal Art in history

Mandelbrot? Never heard of him

Before anybody knew Mandelbrot, artists were seeing fractals in nature and transfered the patterns in painting, design and sculpture. Fractals, as you know, are geometric patterns that are repeated on smaller and smaller scales to produce intricate designs outside the scope of classical geometry. They are described by a Mandelbrot equation.

Art, Exhibitions, Collections

The mind has always had a fixation with recursive and fractal patterns,
largely because our environment is filled with them. Only in the last 40 years
have we been able to finally describe this exquisitely subtle math of interacting patterns. Fractals may have become a cliche in modern computer graphics, but they have a long and rich history in art:

1. Medieval Celtic Book of Kells (597 A.D.)

This cultural treasure contains every variety of design typical of Irish art at its best. The most characteristic ornaments of the Book of Kells, as of other illuminated Irish manuscripts of the period, are the closely coiled spirals connected with each other by a number of curves and terminating in the so-called "trumpet fractal pattern".

2. Fractals have a rich history in African Design:

in village architecture:

and even in traditional hair-style!

Ron Eglash, a professor of comparative studies at Ohio State University, demonstrates the principle with a tool on his Web site with which everyone can create their own computer-generated graphics simulating the fractal branching patterns found in braided hairstyles.

"At first I thought it was just from unconscious social dynamics," Mr. Eglash says, "but during my fieldwork, I found that fractal designs also appear in a wide variety of intentional designs -- hairstyling, textiles, sculpture, painting, carving, metalwork -- and the recursive process of fractal algorithms are even used in African quantitative systems."

3. Persian & traditional Islamic ornaments

Essentially a study in symmetry, extended and enhanced with multiple iterations:

4.The Italian Renaissance & Dutch Masters

Space Filling by Iteration:

Leonardo da Vinci in his famous Treatise of Painting gave examples of what now is called Leonardo method or blotting method - it emphasized power of "messy forms" like stains on old walls, clouds or muddy water in "favoring mind on various discoveries".

Art, Exhibitions, Collections

The Dutch painter Jan Van Goyen (1596-1656) was capable of getting out a picture with "small efforts" from stains of colors. Compare Van Goyen's painted clouds with the typical fractal computer-generated "cloud":

This technique is based on a well-known mathematical algorithm: space filling curve pre-fractals

An interesting application of space filling curves in computer graphics is "half-toning" and dithering of the images:

5. Fractals in Spiritual Art

It's only fitting that the representations of fractals and therefore INFINITY most frequently appear in human art of the Religious and Spiritual varieties:
Islam:

Fractals seem to a distinct element in most world religion's symbolic style:

Not mentioned is Jackson Pollock, who unwittingly painted fractals as well.

I went through a couple of situations like this in the Navy on a Spruance-class destroyer.

Waves over 40 feet tall submerged the bow, ripped fire hoses off their fittings and flattened the life rails to the deck. The whole ship shuddered with every wave impact. We had to wear seatbelts at our watchstations. Although we were half afraid the bow would break off, it was kind of a fun experience.

At one time, we were steaming with an older ship that had riveted hull plates, and we had to turn away from the waves because she was springing her rivets from the impact of running into the waves. Going parallel to those waves is much worse from a comfort standpoint. The worst though is quartering the waves, because you go up and down at the same time as you're rolling side-to-side - tough to eat or keep your food down when that's going on.

In that account she spoke about how hard it was to understand the Christian concept of the Trinity because of the way it's used on NK. Apparently there are three people in NK (Kim Jong Il being one of them) who are worshiped as a trinity of godlike men. That's why it seems appropriate for there to be so much imagery in those posters about threes... three missiles, three people, three prongs, etc... anyway, it really caught my eye that they use 3 so much.

  • Please proofread your content. Two of the posters (not the army training pictures) are clearly Chinese, with Chinese characters, one poster actually saying "China" in it. The fact you lump them all together in one generic translation is definitely not true. The translation you provided does not apply to the Chinese posters, although because I cannot read Korean, I wouldn't be able to tell about the others. The fact that you cannot tell the difference is unacceptable, especially if you're going to group all of them together. Also, the Chinese posters don't even have "anti-US" sentiments in them. There's nothing that says "down with captialism" in them, and there's not even a picture of them crushing a capitol building, or beating the crap out of an American. And also, you can clearly see the South Korean symbol in the headbands of some of the army training pictures. Please take down or make a note of the pictures I've mentioned, as I'm assuming most of your readers will assume what you have when you posted these pictures. No hard feelings, just please be more accurate.
