One Sheet of Paper

"QUANTUM SHOT" #25
link

Paper Sculptures and One-Sheet-Wonders

Danish artist Peter Callesen is making sculptures out of paper... On his site (www.petercallesen.com) you can marvel at the intricate one-sheet cut-outs, as well as full-scale paper "mirages".
Callesen´s work has always contained references to the romantic notion of the unattainable and the sublime. (click on any image to enlarge)

Walking on Snow

Floor installation consisting of 400 unique white hand-cut snowflakes, cut from white A4 and A3 copy paper in 80 gram thickness...

Paper Ladders and Stairs

Installations on 2nd and 3rd floor in the tower of Nikolaj Church, white paper, tape and glue, made for the show in Copenhagen 2003...

more pics here

and finally,
Full-scale Paper House "Mirage"

"The Mirage" house is made of light-weight paper, which would collapse immediately if you would actually attempt to use it, disappearing like a fata morgana on a approach...

--------

British artist Richard Sweeney explores the paper media in a slightly different way:

Also, in physics, we don't worry about minus signs. If something is a positive quantity when it should have been a negative one (which you know from "physical reasoning" ... this is a proof for physicists) you just change the sign. You may also optionally comment "must have lost a minus sign somewhere".

  • I loved them all :P.

But there's a little mistake in the joke about Jesus... to have a parabola, you need one of the variables to be squared, but the other one must remain lineal... meaning each one represents an axis (x or y).

So it should be like "3x squared plus 8y minus 9" if the parabola was parallel to Y, or "3y squared plus 8x minus 9"...or whatever, if it was parallel to X.

    Sorry for my English.

  • "Regarding the limit problem, there is no such thing as negative or positive infinity. Infinity is infinity! That's all!"

That's not true. In simple terms, a limit of infinity means the function increases without bound, while a limit of negative infinity means the function decreases without bound.

    The formal definition of

    lim(x->a) f(x) = -infinity

    would be

    For all e in R, e > 0, there exists d in R, d > 0 such that if |x - a| < d, then f(x) < -e

You see, opening the envelopes is expensive. Reading the digital data on the envelope is cheap - AND the only reason (most people, normal people) send the envelope back to to get the subscription that was offered.

So they just scan the envelope and give you a subscription. They already have your address - it was on the subscription offer they sent you that started all this.
