Atmosphere Goes Nuts

"QUANTUM SHOT" #8
Link - by Avi Abrams

Epic pictures of extreme weather instability

We'll start with a famous shot of a storm approaching over the sea. This is a tropical cyclone "Graham" forming over the Pacific Ocean (off the northwest coast of Australia) -

Sandstorm in Iraq (apparently it's quite a common occurrence; they also have storms like this in Arizona. They call them Haboob's. Still an awesome sight.) More here

(images via)

The image below is from Arizona. The sandstorm blows over the mountain range. Enlarge the picture to see how small the mountains appear under that wave...

A lot more info about sand and dust storms and many mind-boggling pictures are in this DRB article - Dust Stroms

Morning fog in Dubai: (courtesy Harry Lambert):

The following is from the incredible site of North-American tornado-chasers Extreme Instabillity Check it out, they have a lot more images...

(images credit: Extreme instability)

Bookmark their site, they update often (every storm season, of course). The site also documents the evolution of storms, which is quite mesmerizing. Pphotography is by Ryan McGinnis, he also has prints available - the images below are all from one sinlge day of storm-chasing (read details):

It's pretty cool how they appear to be beams going up from the ground when they are actually shining down...

In Antarctica a spectacular cloud appears, born from the extreme weather conditions - a polar stratospheric cloud, cradled by more than 230 kilometers per hour winds:

...and now after all this turmoil and unrest, here is a picture of perfect peace and tranquility. Taken from Paul Kopeikin Gallery
Check out this link, it has a great collection of top-notch photography.

Awesome pictures. I've seen some before but others are new to me - it's certainly a great collection.

The last picture is particularly striking in its simple beauty. Brilliant.

You have never lived in Japan have you? Take it from someone who has had a decade of living in-country and two decades of Japanese language and culture, you need to update your knowledge of the country beyond comics, anime and samurai movies. Try DOGS AND DEMONS.

Krakatoa, and it may be the same ship; nobody ever moved that one-
nobody had the money or the will to do it. Krakatoa killed more people
than the tsunami in 2004, if I recall correctly. first the explosion
and then tsunamis that just kept on coming.

  • It could not be the Aral Sea, even if it does look like some other pics from there. The surrounding geography is not a sea bottom, and besides - the valley the ship is in is a so called V valley, carved out by a river over long periodes of time. if it isnt photoshopped i'd guess it is some king of former great river somwhere in asia/old ussr that is being depleted.

  • The opening of story should bring the characters alive for the readers. The absolute master, at least in English, of the opening was Dickens. His second best opening, clearly achieving the goal, was _David Copperfield_: "I am born."

But, by far the best, is the opening to _A Christmas Carol_: "Marley was dead, to begin with." Now how is that for bringing your characters alive?
