"QUANTUM SHOT" #57 Amazing Ways to Transport "Abnormal" (Oversize) Loads - Part 2 (read Part 1 here) TRANSPORTING SPACE SHUTTLES ... to the launching pad, by means of the famous NASA Crawler: ...and piggy-backing on top of the larger airplane: Columbia on top the Boeing: The Soviet Buran shuttle on top of the giant An-225 (6 engines!) TRANSPORTING OTHER THINGS Well, in South Africa no loads are moved by rail like in the USA, Germany, India and Japan, but they have huge open spaces ideal for transporting large equipment... by means of the HUGE TRUCK TRAINS Looking like something out of a feverish Mad Max dream, these otherworldly centipedes are described here and here as a very capable combination of machines: in fact, THIS IS THE LARGEST ON-HIGHWAY VEHICLE IN THE WORLD! - 370 ton Siemens generator stator with a gross combination load of 860 tons - five Ultra Pacific trucks in one line, giving 4000hp. - Total length 160m. - The heaviest load transported: 950 ton (tunnel boring machine) They also have the largest trailer (with 338 wheels): Finally, on a slightly surrealistic note - INVASION OF THE ABNORMALS The sleepy and dreamy quality of the small British town of Chorley was shattered by the passing of the "abnormal" load truck trains through their main street: Read the FIRST PART of this post Here Also read about the "Biggest Machines in the World": Part 1 Part 2 Permanent Link... |

"The Soviet Buran shuttle on top of the giant An-225 (6 engines!)"
32 wheels!
The greyscale picture of the crawler shows it hauling a Saturn V with its support gantry, not one of the shuttles.
