Pennsylvania Station (New York City), circa 1910
One of the most inspiring architectural masterpieces, Pennsylvania Station was demolished in 1963 to make way for equally unforgettable (in its ugly, brutal, featureless modernism form) Penn Plaza / Madison Square Garden complex. Such an act of vandalism and sheer cultural atrocity was decried internationally and led to preservation of Grand Central Terminal, which faced the similar fate - but thankfully was saved.
