"QUANTUM SHOT" #688
Link - article by Avi Abrams

Have you been April-Fools-Pranked yet? If not, then fall for these
quaint examples of "news" from 1938

Yes, the year is 1938. The advent of Photoshop is still fifty years away,
but that does not mean that a few facts and realities could not be
retouched in time for the April Fools magazine issue. The publication is
"LIFE Magazine", and the resulting examples are somewhat amusing (we
especially like the "stocking-repair beetles"). Copy-paste, with a bit of
      "clone" tool: the Ten-Stack Super-Liner!

Wise little beetles, repairing the stockings! Every lady's dream come true
      -

"The remarkably clean and un-frightening wreck"... and a dog without a
head, or with one head too many:

      Crossing the equator - literally:

Skiing in Egypt? Way back in 1938 it was a real possibility:

French Victorian postcards (what's with that fish?):

If the vintage "photoshop" examples do not strike your fancy, then you can
go through more recent "Office and April Fool Pranks" series, that we've
been running on this site for quite some time: "Work from Home" Policy? -

        in Warsaw, Poland)

Regarding the fish in those delightful French posters, the french refer to April Fools as "Poisson d'Avril", literally translated as "April Fish". Why? No idea, but that probably explains the fish.

We, French (but also Belgium and
Swiss), use to discretely stick a paper fish in the back of people. Why a fish ? There is no definitive statement about that. Mostly historical stuff, about January becoming the first day of the year instead on April. But people continue to offer present for that day. But the present is no longer a real gift, but a joke, a fish, when the seasons of fishing is over.

Here, in Québec, we call someone that will believe almost anything a "fish". So on April's Fool (Poisson d'avril), if you get pranked, and you believe that prank to be true, you're called a "poisson" (fish). I do not know if the french use that expression.

re: Poisson d'avril - French April fools... remember The French Connection? In the opening scene, Popeye gets a tip that drugs will be hidden in a delivery of fish for the fish market of Marseilles. In the midst of gutted fish the police Commissaire asks what day it is... April 1st!! No drugs, cops got fooled by the bad guys.
